It’s worth it if AWS is part of your environment or your next role. Skip it if you’re Microsoft-first and want just one beginner AI credential. In that case, Microsoft’s AI-901 (Azure AI Fundamentals, which replaced AI-900 on June 30, 2026) fits better. AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) is a foundational exam: 90 minutes, 65 questions, 100 USD. AWS says it suits people who use but don’t necessarily build AI/ML solutions on AWS.

Quick verdict
| If you are… | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| AWS-first and want AI vocabulary fast | Worth it |
| Moving from endpoint work toward cloud or platform engineering | Worth it |
| Microsoft-first and only want one beginner AI cert | Take AI-901 instead |
| Aiming to build ML models | Skip it. AWS lists model coding as out of scope |
Exam facts (from AWS)
Per the AWS certification page and the AIF-C01 exam guide, checked October 19, 2026:
| Exam code | AIF-C01 |
| Category | Foundational |
| Duration | 90 minutes |
| Questions | 65 (50 scored, 15 unscored) |
| Cost | 100 USD (see AWS exam pricing for exchange rates) |
| Passing score | 700 on a 100–1,000 scale, compensatory scoring |
| Delivery | Pearson VUE test center or online proctored |
| Validity | 3 years. Recertify by passing the latest version, or by earning Machine Learning Engineer – Associate |
| Language note | German and Italian versions are retired after October 15, 2026 |
The target candidate has up to 6 months of exposure to AI/ML on AWS. AWS expects familiarity with core services like EC2, S3, Lambda, Amazon Bedrock, and Amazon SageMaker AI, plus the shared responsibility model, IAM, and AWS pricing models. If you’re new to AWS, AWS recommends starting with AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials or AWS Technical Essentials.
What the exam covers
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals of AI and ML | 20% |
| Fundamentals of GenAI | 24% |
| Applications of Foundation Models | 28% |
| Guidelines for Responsible AI | 14% |
| Security, Compliance, and Governance for AI Solutions | 14% |
Out of scope, per AWS: coding AI/ML models, data or feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, building ML pipelines, and implementing governance frameworks. Don’t over-study model math. Spend your time on foundation model applications and generative AI concepts, which together make up more than half the scored content.
Why IT pros might care
If your work stays inside Intune, Entra, and Windows endpoints, this certification is a side quest. It becomes useful when your work moves toward:
- AI-driven support tools. Ticket triage, knowledge retrieval, and internal assistants built on services like Amazon Bedrock.
- AI approvals and governance. The responsible AI and security domains help you ask better questions about data exposure and access before an AI tool gets approved.
- Cloud and platform roles. For example, endpoint engineer to cloud operations, support engineer to solutions engineer, or sysadmin to infrastructure automation.
The concepts carry over. Once you know the vocabulary, comparing Azure, AWS, and Google AI claims gets easier.
AWS AI Practitioner vs. Microsoft AI-901
Choose AI-901 if you’re Microsoft-heavy, want the credential that best matches your current endpoint or admin work, or will mostly discuss Copilot and Azure AI. See Is AI-900 worth it for desktop engineers? (AI-900 is now AI-901).
Choose AWS AI Practitioner if you’re deliberately moving toward cloud or platform work, your organization runs AWS, or you want AWS credibility specifically.
AWS also distinguishes this exam from two neighbors. Cloud Practitioner has only one AI-related task statement. AI Business Strategist validates business judgment and doesn’t test AWS AI services. See AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01).
How to study
- Follow AWS’s free Exam Prep Plan on AWS Skill Builder. It includes the official practice question set, pretest, and practice exam.
- Map the in-scope services (Bedrock, SageMaker AI, and the others in the exam guide) to use cases: summarization, search, classification, and support automation.
- Review responsible AI and AI security basics. Together they’re 28% of the scored content.

What to take next
AWS recommends Solutions Architect – Associate for people moving into cloud careers. For data and ML careers, it recommends Data Engineer – Associate and/or Machine Learning Engineer – Associate. Machine Learning Engineer – Associate also recertifies AI Practitioner. See AWS Machine Learning Engineer Associate: worth it?.
FAQ
How much does AWS Certified AI Practitioner cost?
100 USD, per AWS. Check AWS exam pricing for local currency.
How long is the exam?
90 minutes, 65 questions. 50 are scored and 15 are unscored.
What score do I need to pass?
700 on a 100–1,000 scaled score.
Is it better than AI-900 or AI-901?
